Druid FAQ
What are the main Druid class features?
The 2014 Druid's main features are Druidic, prepared Spellcasting, Wild Shape, a Druid Circle, Wild Shape improvements, Timeless Body, Beast Spells, and Archdruid. Spellcasting provides broad healing, control, summoning, elemental, and exploration options, while Wild Shape provides transformation and utility that becomes more capable as the Druid gains levels.
The Druid's class structure combines full prepared spellcasting with Wild Shape. Unlike classes whose later progression adds many separate resource systems, the Druid mostly keeps improving and integrating those two foundations.
1st level: Druidic
Druids know Druidic, a secret language used by the class.
It can be spoken normally among Druids and used to leave hidden messages under the feature's rules.
Other creatures may notice that a message exists but normally need special means to decipher it.
The feature's practical importance depends heavily on how much Druid culture appears in the campaign.
1st level: Spellcasting
Druids are Wisdom-based prepared full spellcasters.
They gain cantrips and spell slots at 1st level and eventually reach 9th-level spells.
The spell list supports:
- healing;
- control;
- elemental effects;
- summoning;
- transformation;
- travel;
- animals and plants;
- environmental utility.
The Druid prepares spells after a long rest, allowing daily adaptation.
2nd level: Wild Shape
Wild Shape lets the Druid transform into a beast the character has seen.
The base class has two uses and regains them after a short or long rest.
The Druid can remain transformed for a level-based duration and can revert earlier according to the feature.
The beast form replaces many of the Druid's game statistics while retaining the elements specifically preserved by Wild Shape.
The feature has Challenge Rating and movement-mode limits that improve with level.
Wild Shape progression
For the base 2014 Druid, the normal maximum forms progress broadly as:
2nd level → CR 1/4, no swimming or flying speed 4th level → CR 1/2, no flying speed 8th level → CR 1
Circle of the Moon changes the normal combat-Wild-Shape limits and therefore must be read separately.
The base progression is designed to keep Wild Shape useful for utility even when it is not the character's main damage source.
2nd level: Druid Circle
At 2nd level, the Druid chooses a Circle.
Circle features arrive at 2nd, 6th, 10th, and 14th level in the 2014 class structure.
The Circle determines whether the Druid leans more strongly toward spellcasting, transformation, support, summoning, spores, stars, wildfire, or another nature-oriented theme.
18th level: Timeless Body
Timeless Body greatly slows the Druid's aging.
It is mostly a narrative and worldbuilding feature rather than a normal combat resource.
The feature reinforces the idea that a high-level Druid has become deeply connected to natural cycles.
18th level: Beast Spells
Beast Spells allows the Druid to cast many Druid spells while in Wild Shape.
The feature relaxes the normal inability to perform spell components while transformed, subject to its stated restrictions.
This is an important integration point between the two major class systems.
The Druid no longer has to choose as sharply between being transformed and using spellcasting.
20th level: Archdruid
Archdruid is the 2014 capstone.
It allows unlimited Wild Shape uses.
It also further improves spellcasting while transformed by allowing the Druid to ignore many normal component requirements for Druid spells, subject to the feature's exceptions for costly or consumed material components.
At this point, Wild Shape becomes an effectively unlimited class tool rather than a short-rest resource.
How the features work together
Prepared Spellcasting gives the Druid broad magical answers.
Wild Shape provides transformation, movement, scouting, and sometimes combat durability.
The Druid Circle decides which part of the class becomes specialised.
High-level features then merge spellcasting and transformation more closely.
The result is a class whose strength lies in adaptation rather than a single repeated action.
