Most 2014 Rangers prioritise Dexterity and Wisdom. A Strength-based Ranger is also fully possible, but the choice should be deliberate because armor, Fighting Style, weapon selection, and multiclass prerequisites all interact with ability scores.

Dexterity

Dexterity is the most common Ranger primary ability.

It powers:

  • bows;
  • finesse weapons;
  • initiative;
  • Dexterity saving throws;
  • Stealth;
  • Acrobatics;
  • Sleight of Hand;
  • Armor Class in light and medium armor.

The Archery Fighting Style strongly reinforces a Dexterity-based ranged build.

Wisdom

Wisdom is the Ranger's spellcasting ability.

It determines spell attack modifier and spell save DC.

Wisdom also supports:

  • Perception;
  • Survival;
  • Animal Handling;
  • Insight;
  • Medicine.

A Ranger whose spell list contains several saving-throw or attack-roll spells benefits substantially from high Wisdom.

A Ranger focused on spells without saves may choose to increase the main weapon stat first.

Constitution

Constitution improves hit points on top of the Ranger's d10 Hit Die.

It also helps maintain concentration.

Because Rangers often maintain a concentration spell while continuing to make weapon attacks, Constitution is a useful third priority.

Strength

Strength can be the primary attack score for a melee Ranger.

It supports:

  • Strength-based melee weapons;
  • Athletics;
  • carrying capacity.

A Strength Ranger still commonly wants Dexterity 13 if multiclassing is relevant because the 2014 Ranger prerequisite specifically requires Dexterity and Wisdom rather than Strength.

Medium armor can reduce the need for extremely high Dexterity for Armor Class.

Intelligence

Intelligence can support Nature, Investigation, History, Arcana, and recall checks related to Favored Enemy.

It is not the spellcasting ability.

A scholarly monster tracker may value it more than a conventional Ranger.

Charisma

Charisma is normally a lower base-class priority.

It can support a social scout, wilderness leader, or Fey Wanderer concept.

Certain subclasses can make Charisma-like social capability more relevant without changing Wisdom as Ranger spellcasting ability.

Multiclassing

The 2014 Ranger multiclassing prerequisites are:

Dexterity 13 Wisdom 13

Both are required.

This matters even for Strength-based Rangers.

Practical priority

Typical Dexterity Ranger:

Dexterity → Wisdom → Constitution → remaining abilities according to concept

Typical Strength Ranger:

Strength → Wisdom / Constitution → the other of Wisdom / Constitution → enough Dexterity for defense and any multiclass requirement

The exact order should follow the weapon and spell plan.
