Sorcerer FAQ
What ability scores are best for a Sorcerer?
Charisma is normally the Sorcerer's highest ability score because it powers spell attacks and spell save DCs. Constitution is usually the second priority for hit points and concentration, especially because Sorcerers already have Constitution saving throw proficiency. Dexterity improves Armor Class and initiative. The 2014 Sorcerer multiclassing prerequisite is Charisma 13.
The Sorcerer has a clear primary ability: Charisma. Constitution and Dexterity are the usual secondary priorities.
Charisma
Charisma is the Sorcerer's spellcasting ability.
It determines:
- spell attack modifier;
- spell save DC.
Because the Sorcerer is a full caster, most offensive and control builds benefit strongly from increasing Charisma.
It also supports common social skills, making the class a natural party face when the player chooses those proficiencies.
Constitution
Constitution increases hit points.
The Sorcerer uses a d6 Hit Die, so additional Constitution is valuable.
The class is already proficient in Constitution saving throws.
That combines well with concentration because concentration checks are Constitution saves.
A good Constitution score makes that proficiency even more effective.
Dexterity
Dexterity improves:
- Armor Class;
- initiative;
- Dexterity saving throws;
- Stealth;
- Acrobatics.
The base Sorcerer normally lacks armor proficiency, so Dexterity can contribute substantially to ordinary defense.
Wisdom
Wisdom supports Perception and Insight and helps with Wisdom saving throws.
It is not a class feature ability, but very low Wisdom can create a significant weakness against common control effects.
Intelligence
Intelligence supports Arcana, Investigation, and knowledge skills.
A scholarly Sorcerer can value it for character reasons.
The class does not require Intelligence to cast spells because Sorcerer magic is Charisma-based.
Strength
Strength is usually a low priority.
It may matter for Athletics, carrying capacity, or an unusual melee build.
Most Sorcerers gain more from keeping distance and investing in defensive abilities.
Multiclassing
The 2014 Sorcerer multiclassing prerequisite is:
Charisma 13
This makes the class relatively easy to combine mechanically with Paladin, Bard, or Warlock when other prerequisites are also satisfied.
Practical priority
A conventional Sorcerer often follows:
Charisma → Constitution → Dexterity → Wisdom → Intelligence / Strength according to concept
Some Origins can alter secondary priorities, but Charisma remains the core.
