Identity

The Swashbuckler is a charismatic melee-duelist Rogue that fights through speed, one-on-one pressure and hit-and-run movement rather than hiding every round. Its defining change is positional: the subclass makes melee dueling safer and provides a special one-on-one Sneak Attack route without removing the normal Rogue methods.

How it fits the Rogue chassis

Swashbuckler begins at 3rd Rogue level and gains further archetype features at 9th, 13th, and 17th level. Swashbuckler gains archetype features at Rogue levels 3, 9, 13, and 17. Fancy Footwork and Rakish Audacity define the style immediately, while later milestones add social control, physical finesse, and a high-level retry tool.

Ability-score implications

Dexterity remains the main attack and defense ability. Charisma is the archetype's important secondary score because it improves initiative through Rakish Audacity and supports Panache and social Expertise.

Combat and exploration role

Fight like a mobile duelist. Move into melee, make a finesse attack, and use Fancy Footwork to leave the target without needing Disengage against that creature. Preserve the bonus action for Dash, Hide, Panache or another option instead of automatically spending it to escape.

Sneak Attack remains central

Rakish Audacity creates a special one-on-one Sneak Attack route. If you are within 5 feet of the target, no other creatures are within 5 feet of you, and you do not have disadvantage, you can Sneak Attack without advantage or an ally next to the target. Normal Sneak Attack restrictions still apply.
