Ability scores

Strength and Constitution remain the main Barbarian abilities. This path does not introduce a separate combat spellcasting stat. Wisdom can support perception and the spiritual theme, but the path's core protection mechanics work through weapon hits, Rage and reactions.

Rage management

Almost every defining combat feature depends on Rage. Ancestral Protectors triggers only while raging, Spirit Shield requires Rage, and Vengeful Ancestors builds on Spirit Shield. A normal non-raging turn is still a Barbarian turn, but the subclass's defender identity is much weaker outside Rage.

Positioning and target choice

Hit the enemy you most want to control early in the turn, then position so that attacking you is inconvenient but attacking your allies is inefficient. Keep your reaction available when Spirit Shield may prevent a large hit.

Reckless Attack and this Path

Reckless Attack can be worth the defensive risk when you absolutely need the first hit of the turn to land on the enemy you want Ancestral Protectors to hinder. Rage resistance and Spirit Shield can help the party absorb the consequences, but using Reckless automatically can still expose you to unnecessary focus fire.

Common mistake

A common mistake is attacking whichever creature is easiest to hit. Ancestral Protectors only hinders the first creature you hit on your turn, so target selection is part of the subclass's defense. Mark the enemy whose attacks matter most.
