Path of the Ancestral Guardian FAQ
What is the Path of the Ancestral Guardian?
The Path of the Ancestral Guardian is a defensive Barbarian path that summons ancestral spirits to hinder enemies, protect allies and punish attacks made against anyone other than the Barbarian. Choosing Ancestral Guardian at Barbarian 3 adds its defender identity to the normal Rage, Reckless Attack, Extra Attack, Fast Movement, Brutal Critical, Relentless Rage, and other core Barbarian progression.
Identity
The Path of the Ancestral Guardian is a defensive Barbarian path that summons ancestral spirits to hinder enemies, protect allies and punish attacks made against anyone other than the Barbarian.
Subclass timing
A Barbarian chooses Path of the Ancestral Guardian at 3rd level. The path adds further subclass features at Barbarian levels 6, 10, and 14, expanding protective spirit features while the base Barbarian continues to improve Rage, durability, mobility, and weapon pressure.
Ability-score implications
Strength and Constitution remain the main Barbarian abilities. This path does not introduce a separate combat spellcasting stat. Wisdom can support perception and the spiritual theme, but the path's core protection mechanics work through weapon hits, Rage and reactions.
How it plays
Hit the enemy you most want to control early in the turn, then position so that attacking you is inconvenient but attacking your allies is inefficient. Keep your reaction available when Spirit Shield may prevent a large hit.
Relationship with Rage
Almost every defining combat feature depends on Rage. Ancestral Protectors triggers only while raging, Spirit Shield requires Rage, and Vengeful Ancestors builds on Spirit Shield. A normal non-raging turn is still a Barbarian turn, but the subclass's defender identity is much weaker outside Rage.
