Barbarian FAQ
What ability scores are best for a Barbarian?
Strength is usually the Barbarian's highest ability score because it drives the attacks that work best with Rage and Reckless Attack and supports Athletics. Constitution is normally the second priority because it increases hit points and contributes to Unarmored Defense, while Dexterity improves Armor Class, initiative, and Dexterity saving throws. The 2014 multiclass prerequisite for Barbarian is Strength 13.
Most Barbarians prioritise Strength, Constitution, and Dexterity. The exact distribution depends on armor, subclass, feats, species, and character concept, but the base class strongly rewards Strength and Constitution.
Strength
Strength is normally the Barbarian's most important score.
It powers melee weapon attacks using Strength and therefore works naturally with both Rage Damage and Reckless Attack.
Strength also supports Athletics.
That makes it useful for many physical challenges outside straightforward weapon attacks.
For multiclassing under the 2014 rules, Barbarian requires Strength 13.
Constitution
Constitution increases hit points.
Because Barbarians already use a d12 Hit Die, Constitution builds on an unusually strong durability foundation.
Constitution also contributes to Unarmored Defense.
A Barbarian who plans to fight without armor therefore gains both more hit points and better Armor Class from Constitution.
Dexterity and defense
Dexterity contributes to Armor Class through Unarmored Defense.
It also improves initiative, Dexterity saving throws, and useful skills.
However, a Barbarian usually does not need Dexterity to become the primary attack score.
A Dexterity-based Barbarian can be built, but it gives up some of the normal synergy with Rage Damage and Reckless Attack.
Unarmored Defense
A Barbarian using Unarmored Defense calculates Armor Class as:
10 + Dexterity modifier + Constitution modifier
A shield can still be used.
However, medium armor may provide a better Armor Class for some characters.
Do not increase Dexterity and Constitution only because “Barbarians should not wear armor.”

Wisdom and other mental scores
Wisdom can be valuable for Perception and common Wisdom saving throws.
Charisma may matter for a leader, intimidator, or social character.
Intelligence may support a more knowledgeable or scholarly concept.
The base Barbarian mechanics do not strongly reward these scores, so the correct mental-stat priority depends heavily on character concept and campaign.
Practical priority
A conventional Barbarian often follows:
Strength → Constitution → Dexterity → mental scores according to concept
This is not mandatory.
The important principle is understanding what is lost when Strength is deprioritised.
Rage Damage and Reckless Attack are deliberately written to work best with Strength-based melee offense.
Alternative builds can function, but they are making a conscious trade rather than following the base class's strongest mechanical synergy.
