A Barbarian is a martial class built around raw physical power, primal fury, exceptional durability, and the ability to commit aggressively to dangerous fights. The class is most famous for Rage, but Rage is more than ordinary anger. Depending on the character, it can represent ancestral spirits, predatory instinct, elemental fury, pain, wild magic, nature, or an intense expression of the self. Mechanically, Barbarians combine a large Hit Die, physical resistance, Strength-based offense, mobility, and features that reward calculated risk.

Core class profile

In the 2014 rules, a Barbarian uses a d12 Hit Die, the largest standard class Hit Die.

Barbarians are proficient with light armor, medium armor, shields, simple weapons, and martial weapons.

Their saving throw proficiencies are Strength and Constitution.

Strength is normally the primary ability because the class's best-known offensive features are designed around Strength-based melee attacks.

Constitution supports hit points and also contributes to Unarmored Defense.

Rage and resistance

Rage is the Barbarian's defining feature.

While raging under the 2014 rules and not wearing heavy armor, the Barbarian gains several benefits.

These include advantage on Strength checks and Strength saving throws, additional damage on qualifying Strength-based melee weapon attacks, and resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage.

That resistance is one of the main reasons a Barbarian can remain in dangerous positions longer than many other characters.

It does not make the Barbarian immune to damage.

It also does not automatically protect against every damage type.

Offense and Reckless Attack

At 2nd level, Reckless Attack gives the Barbarian a major accuracy tool.

When used on the first qualifying attack of the turn, it can provide advantage on Strength-based melee weapon attacks for that turn.

The drawback is that attacks against the Barbarian have advantage until the Barbarian's next turn.

This creates a central Barbarian decision:

Is hitting this target worth becoming easier to hit in return?

Because Rage can reduce common physical damage, the Barbarian is unusually well positioned to accept that risk in the right situation.

Durability does not mean carelessness

Barbarians are tough, but the class is not designed to ignore positioning.

A Barbarian who stands inside the reach of every enemy, uses Reckless Attack automatically, and spends Rage on trivial encounters can still be overwhelmed.

Good Barbarian play uses durability to create pressure.

That may mean blocking a route, threatening a dangerous enemy, protecting a vulnerable ally, or remaining in a position another party member could not safely hold.

Party and exploration role

In combat, the Barbarian commonly functions as a front-line pressure character.

The class can absorb punishment, force enemies to deal with a dangerous melee threat, and make risky positions safer for less durable allies.

Outside combat, high Strength and proficiency choices can make the Barbarian valuable for Athletics and other physical challenges.

Skills such as Animal Handling, Nature, Perception, and Survival can also support a wilderness or primal identity.

The class therefore does not have to become a character who only matters after initiative is rolled.

Progression and Primal Paths

The Barbarian gains features such as Extra Attack, Fast Movement, Feral Instinct, Brutal Critical, Relentless Rage, Persistent Rage, Indomitable Might, and Primal Champion as levels increase.

At 3rd level, the Barbarian chooses a Primal Path.

The Path determines how the character's Rage and martial identity develop.

Different Paths can make a Barbarian more defensive, more spiritual, more magical, more aggressive, or more focused on protecting others.

In short

A Barbarian is a high-durability martial class that combines Rage, Strength-based attacks, mobility, and risk-reward mechanics.

The class is straightforward to understand at a basic level, but good play still depends on timing Rage, choosing when Reckless Attack is worth the risk, and using durability to control dangerous areas of the battlefield.
