Most Bards prioritise Charisma first, followed by Dexterity and Constitution. The Bard College, armor access, weapon plan, skills, feats, and party role can change the exact order, but the base class strongly rewards Charisma.

Charisma

Charisma is the Bard's spellcasting ability.

It determines:

  • Bard spell attack modifier;
  • Bard spell save DC;
  • the number of Bardic Inspiration uses in the 2014 rules.

Charisma also supports several of the skills most commonly associated with Bards, including Persuasion, Deception, Performance, and Intimidation.

This means one high ability score can simultaneously improve spellcasting, support, and social capability.

For most Bards, Charisma should be increased before attempting to maximise a secondary score.

Dexterity

Dexterity is normally the Bard's strongest secondary ability.

Bards use light armor in the base 2014 class, so Dexterity directly contributes to Armor Class.

It also improves:

  • initiative;
  • Dexterity saving throws;
  • Acrobatics;
  • Sleight of Hand;
  • Stealth;
  • finesse weapon attacks;
  • many ranged weapon attacks.

A Bard who expects to participate in weapon combat gains even more value from Dexterity.

Some Bard Colleges provide additional armor or martial tools that can alter how much Dexterity is required for defense.

Constitution

Constitution increases hit points.

The Bard uses a d8 Hit Die, which provides moderate rather than exceptional durability.

Constitution therefore helps the character survive when enemies reach the back or mid line.

It is also important for concentration saving throws.

Because many strong Bard control and support spells require concentration, Constitution can indirectly protect some of the Bard's most important combat contributions.

Wisdom

Wisdom is not a core Bard class ability, but it remains useful.

It supports Perception and Insight and contributes to Wisdom saving throws.

A Bard acting as an investigator, negotiator, advisor, or party scout may value Wisdom more highly than a purely performance-focused character.

Intelligence

Intelligence can support knowledge skills such as Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, and Religion.

Jack of All Trades means a Bard can still be reasonably useful on many Intelligence checks even without full proficiency.

A lore-focused character may choose to invest more heavily in Intelligence, but the base class does not require it for spellcasting.

Strength

Strength is usually the easiest score for a conventional Bard to deprioritise.

It matters more for:

  • Athletics;
  • carrying capacity;
  • Strength-based weapon builds;
  • specific College or character concepts.

A College of Valor or other martial Bard can still choose a Strength-based plan, but Dexterity is generally more efficient for a typical light-armored Bard.

Expertise does not replace the underlying ability score

Expertise doubles the proficiency bonus for selected proficient skills.

That can make a Bard extremely reliable.

However, Expertise does not make the underlying ability score irrelevant.

A Persuasion expert still benefits from Charisma.

A Stealth expert still benefits from Dexterity.

Choose Expertise skills that align with the role the character actually intends to perform.

Multiclassing

Under the 2014 multiclassing rules, a Bard requires Charisma 13 to multiclass into or out of the class.

This is another reason Charisma remains central even for unusual Bard builds.

Practical priority

A conventional Bard often follows:

Charisma → Dexterity → Constitution → Wisdom / Intelligence according to role → Strength unless the build needs it

This is guidance rather than a mandatory array.

A martial College, species features, armor access, feats, and party composition can all change the exact distribution.
