A Bard's subclass is called a Bard College. In the 2014 Bard progression, the College is chosen at 3rd level. The base class then gains College features at 3rd, 6th, and 14th level. Different published sources introduced different Colleges over the lifetime of pre-2024 Fifth Edition. The exact options available to a player depend on the sourcebooks and campaign rules being used.

College of Lore

College of Lore is the broad knowledge and magical-flexibility College.

It adds additional skill proficiencies at 3rd level.

Cutting Words allows the Bard to spend Bardic Inspiration as a reaction to interfere with certain rolls made by another creature.

At 6th level, Additional Magical Secrets gives the Lore Bard earlier access to spells from outside the Bard spell list.

At 14th level, Peerless Skill lets the Bard use Bardic Inspiration to improve one of their own ability checks.

Lore is a strong choice for players who want the Bard's skill, support, and magical-flexibility identity to become even more prominent.

College of Valor

College of Valor is one of the original martial Bard Colleges.

It gives the Bard additional combat proficiencies and expands Bardic Inspiration through Combat Inspiration.

Later features improve weapon-based combat.

Valor is suitable for a player who wants to remain a full Bard spellcaster while becoming more comfortable fighting alongside martial characters.

It does not turn the Bard into a Fighter.

The class still gains most of its versatility from spells, Inspiration, and skills.

College of Glamour

College of Glamour focuses on supernatural presence, enchantment, movement, and commanding attention.

Its features can improve allied positioning and reinforce the Bard's ability to influence or captivate others.

This College is particularly appropriate for a character whose performance feels explicitly magical or fey-influenced.

College of Swords

College of Swords is a weapon-focused Bard College.

It adds a Fighting Style and uses Blade Flourishes to combine weapon attacks with movement, defense, or additional combat effects.

The College rewards a Bard who wants to participate directly in weapon combat while retaining full spellcasting.

Because Bardic Inspiration interacts with Flourishes, resource management becomes more personal than on a conventional support Bard.

College of Whispers

College of Whispers gives the Bard a darker identity built around fear, secrets, deception, and psychologically threatening magic.

Its features can turn Bardic Inspiration into offensive pressure and support infiltration or manipulation.

It is particularly suited to intrigue-heavy or morally darker character concepts.

College of Eloquence

College of Eloquence pushes the Bard's communication and reliability to an extreme.

Its features reinforce Persuasion, Deception, and the ability to make Bardic Inspiration and social interaction more dependable.

It is a natural choice for diplomats, negotiators, advocates, speakers, and characters who want social mastery to be central to the build.

College of Creation

College of Creation focuses on the magical power of creativity itself.

It expands Bardic Inspiration with additional effects and gains features that allow the Bard to animate or create objects through magical performance.

This College is suited to a player who wants a highly magical interpretation of art and creation rather than a purely social or martial Bard.

College of Spirits

College of Spirits focuses on stories, spirits, omens, and supernatural tales.

Its features use a spiritual focus and Tales from Beyond to create changing magical effects.

The subclass is more unpredictable than many other Colleges because its signature storytelling feature can produce different results.

It works well for a Bard themed around mediums, occult storytellers, spirit speakers, or keepers of supernatural lore.

How do you choose a Bard College?

Choose a College based on the part of the Bard you want to emphasise.

A simplified comparison is:

Lore → skills, disruption, magical flexibility Valor → martial support and sturdier weapon combat Glamour → presence, enchantment, ally movement Swords → weapon combat and mobile flourishes Whispers → intrigue, fear, deception, psychic offense Eloquence → social reliability and communication Creation → magical creativity and animated objects Spirits → supernatural stories and variable spirit effects

Each College changes the Bard's priorities in a different way while leaving the core Bard spellcasting and Bardic Inspiration chassis intact.

What every College retains

Choosing a College does not replace the Bard's core class.

Every Bard still retains the base class's major systems, including:

  • Charisma-based Spellcasting;
  • Bardic Inspiration;
  • Jack of All Trades;
  • Expertise;
  • later Magical Secrets.

The College determines specialisation.

It does not remove the Bard's identity as a full caster, supporter, and skill-focused character.
