Messenger FAQ
What ability scores are best for a Messenger?
Dexterity and Charisma are the Messenger's primary ability scores. Dexterity supports finesse and ranged attacks, initiative, and several useful skills; Charisma supports social interaction and combines with Dexterity for Unarmoured Defence. Constitution is a useful third priority for hit points. Under the multiple-calling rules, Messenger requires Dexterity 13 and Charisma 13.
The Messenger is built around Dexterity and Charisma. Those two scores support both the mechanical and narrative sides of the calling. Constitution is normally the next most useful score because the Messenger uses a d8 Hit Die and benefits from additional durability.
Dexterity
Dexterity supports the Messenger's common weapon attacks, initiative, Dexterity saving throws, several useful skills, and Unarmoured Defence.
Sneak Attack also encourages the use of qualifying finesse or ranged weapons.
That makes Dexterity the most natural combat ability for most Messenger builds.
Charisma
Charisma supports the Messenger's role as an envoy, advisor, and social specialist.
It also contributes directly to Unarmoured Defence.
That means Charisma is not merely a roleplaying ability for the class.
Improving it can improve both social effectiveness and defense.
Herald also rewards Charisma directly by adding the character's Charisma modifier to initiative through Forth to Battle.
Constitution
Constitution increases hit points.
The Messenger uses a d8 Hit Die, so Constitution can make a noticeable difference to survivability.
A mobile character still gets hit eventually.
Constitution therefore remains a practical third priority even though it does not power the calling's signature features.
Wisdom, Intelligence, and Strength
Wisdom can support Perception, Insight, and travel-oriented awareness.
Intelligence can support knowledge-based checks and a more scholarly Messenger concept.
Strength is normally less important unless the character is pursuing a specific martial or Herald build that genuinely benefits from it.
None of these scores normally replaces Dexterity or Charisma as the core foundation.
Practical priority
A conventional Messenger often follows:
Dexterity / Charisma → Constitution → Wisdom or Intelligence according to role → Strength unless the build specifically needs it
The exact order between Dexterity and Charisma depends on whether the character leans more heavily toward weapon combat or social/support play.
For multiclassing, the current Messenger rules use Dexterity 13 and Charisma 13.
