A Messenger's subclass is called a Messenger Path. At 3rd level, the calling chooses between two published Paths: - Counsellor - Herald Both Paths keep the base Messenger's movement, skills, Sneak Attack, Virtues or Crafts, Errand Runner, and other core features. The difference is which part of the Messenger's identity becomes dominant.

When the Path is chosen

The Messenger chooses a Path at 3rd level.

This is the class's major specialization decision.

Additional Path features arrive later in the 10-level progression.

The choice should therefore be made based on the kind of Messenger the player wants to become rather than only one isolated feature.

Counsellor

Counsellor is the social and support-oriented Path.

It develops the Messenger toward advice, councils, communication, social expertise, and helping allies.

At 3rd level, Counsellor gains two social-skill proficiencies from its listed choices; if it already has one of those proficiencies, that skill can instead benefit from double proficiency.

Words of Guard and Guiding lets the Counsellor use a bonus action for a Charisma check or the Help action, and it can extend attack-related Help to an ally attacking a creature within 30 feet when the ally can hear and understand the Counsellor.

At 7th level, A Dangerous Gift sharpens the Counsellor's social judgement: depending on whether the character is miserable, it grants advantage to different pairs of Insight, Persuasion, Riddle, and Deception checks.

Choose Counsellor when the player wants the Messenger's social, advisory, and support role to be the centre of the build.

Herald

Herald is the more martial Messenger Path.

Its published features improve direct combat capability.

Herald's armor, shield, and martial-weapon training are the proficiencies listed by that Path.

Herald also gains a Fighting Style and an initiative-related benefit connected to Charisma.

At 7th level, Herald gains Extra Attack.

This allows the Messenger to make two attacks instead of one when using the Attack action under the normal feature rules.

Choose Herald when the player wants to remain a Messenger while placing much more emphasis on weapon combat and martial leadership.

Choosing between them

Choose Counsellor when the main appeal is:

  • social interaction;
  • advice;
  • councils;
  • supporting allies;
  • Help-based utility;
  • communication.

Choose Herald when the main appeal is:

  • martial combat;
  • weapon use;
  • stronger armor options;
  • Fighting Style;
  • improved initiative;
  • Extra Attack.

Neither Path is inherently the “correct” Messenger.

They create different roles.

What both Paths retain

A Path does not replace the base calling.

A Herald still has Folk-lore, Tireless and Swift, Sneak Attack, Errand Runner, and the rest of the Messenger chassis.

A Counsellor still has mobility, combat options, Sneak Attack, and defensive tools.

The Path changes emphasis rather than deleting the character's original identity.

Progression beyond 3rd level

Both Paths receive later features as the Messenger advances.

The important later milestone in the current 10-level structure is 7th level.

Counsellor gains its later support-oriented feature.

Herald gains Extra Attack.

Both Paths grant their defining features at 3rd level and a second Path feature at 7th level.

The important distinction is how Counsellor and Herald change the Messenger's role: Counsellor emphasizes social support and advice, while Herald emphasizes martial leadership and weapon combat.
