The Warden is the wilderness protector of *The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying*. The calling represents a character who guards roads, settlements, borders, and wild lands from servants of the Shadow. It combines martial combat with tracking, regional expertise, favoured foes, and journey mechanics.

Core class profile

The Warden uses a d10 Hit Die.

Its primary abilities are Dexterity and Wisdom.

Saving throw proficiencies are Strength and Wisdom.

The calling is proficient with light armor, medium armor, shields, simple weapons, and martial weapons.

This makes the Warden a durable martial explorer rather than a spellcasting Ranger.

Shadow-lore

At 1st level, Shadow-lore gives the Warden specialised knowledge of dangerous foes associated with the Shadow.

The feature improves later in the progression as the Warden encounters and learns more enemies.

Warded Lands uses the terrain and region benefits defined by the Warden calling.

Warded Lands

Also at 1st level, the Warden selects lands the character has sworn to protect.

Inside those regions, the calling gains stronger knowledge, travel, tracking, and journey benefits.

The source can allow the Warden to cover more than one journey role, improve fatigue-related travel saves, increase travel pace, and learn better information while tracking.

Additional Warded Lands are gained later.

This is a campaign-facing feature: it becomes stronger when travel and geography actually matter.

Fighting Style and Virtues

At 2nd level, the Warden gains a Fighting Style.

The source supports styles such as Archery, Duelling, Protection, and Two-Weapon Fighting.

The calling also gains several Virtue choices and can choose Crafts at certain advancement points.

Warden Oath

At 3rd level, choose:

  • Forayer;
  • Hunter.

Forayer specialises in stealth, initiative, ambush, and hit-and-run tactics.

Hunter specialises in tracking favoured foes and choosing a Hunter's Prey technique.

Rumour of the Earth

At 3rd level, Rumour of the Earth allows the Warden to sense whether favoured foes are present within a large regional range.

The range is based on Wisdom and is larger in Warded Lands.

The feature detects presence and type, not precise location or number.

It returns after a short or long rest.

Extra Attack and Long Stride

At 5th level, Extra Attack provides two attacks with the Attack action.

At 9th level, Long Stride lets the Warden Dash as a bonus action; while in a Warded Land, difficult terrain no longer costs extra movement.

Party role

A Warden can function as:

  • melee or ranged martial character;
  • scout;
  • tracker;
  • wilderness guide;
  • journey specialist;
  • ambusher;
  • monster hunter;
  • protector of specific regions.

In short

The Warden is a non-spellcasting wilderness martial calling.

Warded Lands make geography matter.

Shadow-lore makes enemy knowledge matter.

Rumour of the Earth helps find threats.

Forayer or Hunter determines whether the character focuses on ambush or relentless hunting.
