What It Is
Abbreviations collects related abbreviation references in one place.
This page is a compact play reference. If a spell, feature, monster, item, or DM ruling gives a more specific instruction, use that specific instruction.
How To Use It
Open a specific reference below when a class feature, spell, item, monster, or ruling points to it.
Limits And Rolls
- These pages are quick references, not full character options.
- Specific rules override the general reference when they conflict.
- You only roll when the rule, DM, spell, item, or feature asks for a roll.
Rule References
AC
AC means Armor Class. Use AC as the target number an attack roll must meet or beat to hit a creature or object.
Open page →ASI
ASI means Ability Score Improvement. Use an ASI when a class feature grants Ability Score Improvement. You normally increase one ability score by 2, or two ability scores by 1 each, within the normal maximum. If feats are allowed, the ASI can often be exchanged for a feat.
Open page →DC
DC means Difficulty Class. Use a DC as the target number for an ability check or saving throw. The roll succeeds when the total meets or beats the DC.
Open page →HP
HP means Hit Points. Use HP to track how much damage a creature or object can take before reaching 0 hit points.
Open page →PB
PB means Proficiency Bonus. Add PB to rolls where you are proficient, and to rules that explicitly scale with proficiency bonus.
Open page →THP
THP means Temporary Hit Points. Use THP as a damage buffer that is lost before normal hit points.
