Physical power and athletic ability
Strength
Strength measures physical power, athletic ability, and a character's capacity to exert force.
What It Is
Strength is one of the six ability scores that define what a character or creature is naturally good at.
This page is a compact play reference. If a spell, feature, monster, item, or DM ruling gives a more specific instruction, use that specific instruction.
How To Use It
Use Strength for physical force, lifting, breaking, grappling, climbing, jumping, swimming, and melee power when a rule calls for it.
Limits And Rolls
- The DM chooses the ability for an uncertain task unless a rule already specifies it.
- Skills can pair with an ability score when the task fits that skill.
- A feature, spell, item, or saving throw can use this ability in a specific way.
- When a Strength roll is needed, roll d20 + the Strength modifier, plus proficiency bonus if a relevant proficiency applies.
