Movement rule
Burrowing
Burrowing is a movement rule used during exploration, encounters, and combat.
What It Is
Burrowing lets a creature move through soil, sand, earth, or similar material if it has a burrowing speed.
This page is a compact play reference. If a spell, feature, monster, item, or DM ruling gives a more specific instruction, use that specific instruction.
How To Use It
Spend burrowing speed through a material the creature can burrow through.
Limits And Rolls
- Burrowing does not automatically work through solid stone unless a rule says it does.
- The creature needs a burrowing speed or another feature that allows it.
- Burrowing normally requires no roll unless the DM rules the material is unstable or difficult.
- You only roll when the rule, DM, spell, item, or feature asks for a roll.
